Life Span’s Center for Legal Services and Advocacy seeks a Paralegal to assist our Des Plaines staff of 4 attorneys in providing legal services to victims of violence. Life Span is a nationally known leader in the provision of services to victims of violence and their children. Our comprehensive services include legal representation, counseling, and advocacy. Our work encompasses such issues as police domestic violence, immigration, employment issues, sexual assault protective orders, mental health, teen dating violence, and battered women as defendants. Our agency has two sites, one in Des Plaines and one in Chicago. Our services are available in English, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Telugu, and Polish and are free of charge. Our agency provides national leadership in policy work and legislation, and our staff has trained lawyers and other professionals in Illinois and across the country.

General Job Description: Assist victims of domestic and sexual violence who seek civil legal representation and/or criminal court advocacy and provide paralegal support and additional assistance to attorneys as needed.

Job Duties:

  • Conduct client interviews and complete intake paperwork.
  • Explain Life Span services and the Illinois Domestic Violence Act to clients and help them form a plan of action based on their options under the law.
  • Explain domestic relations and immigration legal remedies available to clients.
  • Provide clients with referrals to other needed services.
  • Maintain case files.
  • Maintain complete client statistics and submit as required by Life Span administration on a timely basis.
  • Accompany clients and attorneys to court.
  • Translate written documents and interpret at client interviews and to assist clients in court.
  • Attend and participate in trainings and outreach as assigned.
  • Assist attorneys with document preparation.

 
Reports to: Supervising Attorney
 
Qualifications: Bachelor of Arts Degree &/or Paralegal Certificate; must be bilingual in Spanish, Polish, Arabic, or Korean; must demonstrate a commitment to working in the not-for-profit/public interest sector; prior experience in working in a social service agency or with domestic violence victims is helpful.

General Description:

The Administrative Assistant position is located in our Chicago office. This is a dynamic office consisting of 9 attorneys specializing in domestic relations and immigration law, three paralegals, two advocates and a counselor. The administrative assistant is a first contact position critical to our office’s successful operation. The administrative assistant is responsible for coordinating the functioning of the office, answering the telephone and assisting with client requests, filing, processing mail, minor bookkeeping, scheduling, assisting with ordering and maintaining supplies, and other duties.

Qualifications:
Qualifications include excellent organization, communication skills, problem solving, ability to work with clients in crisis, ability to follow directions but think for yourself.
Some experience in domestic violence services or related filed is helpful. Bachelor’s Degree is preferred but not required.
