Life Span uses its experience in serving victims to create and implement public policy initiatives on behalf of survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and their children.
These efforts include monitoring and supporting legislation, educating legislators, community members and local policymakers on issues that affect survivors; and collaboratively exploring solutions for barriers impacting their safety and well-being.
Institutional Advocacy – Public Policy Initiatives
Life Span staff, board members, and volunteers engage in institutional advocacy with professionals to ensure the responsive and appropriate delivery of public services to battered women, survivors of sexual assault, and their children by the medical community, criminal justice system, law enforcement, educators, and social service providers, including:
Education on domestic and sexual violence to lawyers, hospitals, school professionals and other service providers.
Consultation regarding public and institutional policies that impact victims of domestic and sexual violence.
Groundbreaking immigration project that combines legal representation, advocacy with law enforcement regarding protections for immigrant crime victims and education efforts on immigration law and victim rights.
Specialized efforts to address law enforcement involved domestic violence and sexual assault and to end the code of silence surrounding the special circumstances these victims face.
Life Span Community Involvement
Advocacy on the issues of domestic violence and sexual assault is provided by members of our staff, board, and volunteers. We speak before civic groups, businesses, religious institutions, and schools. This service is provided to reduce the community’s acceptance and tolerance of domestic violence and sexual assault, and to increase the overall community awareness of the prevalence and detrimental nature of these crimes.
